Homeowners Insurance Policy: Coverage D, E, and F Explained

Posted on

When it comes to protecting your home, you don’t want to take any chances; you need to have the right level of coverage in place so that if there’s a catastrophe that damages your home, you can rest easy knowing that everything will be taken care of. Coverage D, E, and F are all important parts of your homeowners insurance policy that help you do just that when they’re properly implemented and utilized. If you’re not sure what these three coverages mean or how to maximize their benefits, we’ve got the answers right here before you contact the best homeowners insurance companies in California!

Coverage D: Additional Living Expenses

If a covered loss renders your home uninhabitable or in need of repair that can’t be done while you live there, coverage D will pay for additional living expenses (Ex: hotel bills) as well as your temporary living quarters expenses (Ex: moving costs). You’ll typically receive 50 percent reimbursement for your first month’s extra living expenses if you are forced to move from your home due to a covered peril. The number of days of housing assistance is dependent on what’s contained in your policy and may not extend beyond 30 days.

Coverage E: Personal Liability

If you own a home, there’s a good chance that it’s filled with expensive items you don’t want to replace. One of your insurance policy’s primary jobs is to protect those assets against loss (or theft). That includes accidental damage caused by your family members, guests or pets—meaning you could end up footing the bill if somebody gets hurt on your property. Personal liability coverage protects against third-party claims that arise from accidents that occur on your property.

Coverage F: Medical Expenses

The medical expenses part of your policy covers your medical bills if you suffer an injury at someone else’s property. Medical expenses are more about protecting yourself against personal liability than covering injuries sustained during a house fire or robbery. For example, if you’re sued for medical costs because you tripped on a rock in someone’s yard, coverage F would cover those costs. But if you slip on that same rock while rescuing a child from drowning in their pool, it wouldn’t be covered under F—it would fall under E (personal liability). Coverage F also covers emergency expenses incurred outside of your home as well.

The purpose of a homeowners insurance policy is to provide coverage against liability for property damage and personal injury that you or your family members cause to others. The first three coverages (A, B, and C) apply to tangible items inside and outside your home, whereas coverage D covers additional living expenses when incurred, coverage E covers personal liability, and coverage F covers medical expenses.
