College Student Car Insurance Considerations

Posted on

College is a time of new experiences, learning and growth opportunities, and changes. The question is: does it change the kind of car insurance you should have? There are many things to consider when attempting to get car insurance quotes, from proactively reaching out, to even getting on the lists of insurance lead generation companies. Above all, you need to be an informed consumer, and we are going to cover the key points here.

Do You Need Separate Insurance?

One of the first questions you may have is whether a college student should have their own, separate insurance policy. There are several things to consider when determining this.

The first is, whether you are going to keep your parents’ address as your permanent address, or change your address to somewhere on or near campus. In the case of the former, you may be able to stay on your parents’ insurance plan, but in the case of the latter, you may need to check with your insurance agent to see if you are still able to do so.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you will be out of state. It may still be possible to stay on your parents’ insurance policy if this is the case, if your parent owns the vehicle you will be driving. If not, you may not be able to do so. If you have any questions about it, again, it can be helpful to discuss these with your insurance agent.

It is actually important to know who owns the car, whether or not you are out of state.  If your parents, or you and your parents are both on your car’s title, you may be able to stay on your parents’ insurance policy. If you alone are on the title, however, you may need a separate insurance policy under your own name.

What Kind of Coverage Should You Choose?

A big question you may have about college student car insurance is what type of coverage(s) you should get. Comprehensive coverage may be ideal if you are planning on parking outside, because it can cover you if your car is stolen or needs repairs, and collision coverage may be valuable if you are planning on driving to classes, because it can protect you in the event of an accident. You may need both anyway if you are leasing or financing a vehicle, but if your vehicle is paid off you have the option of dropping either or both of these coverages, depending on your needs, but if you do so, you need to be prepared to cover the costs of repairs yourself.

Discounts Available for College Students

The last question you may have is if there are discounts available for college students. And the answer is one you may like to hear: yes. In fact, there are several discounts available. You may get a discount on your car insurance if you:

  • Are a resident student
  • Get good grades
  • Bundle your insurance policies
  • Use an anti-theft device

If any of these are the case for you, then talk to your insurance provider, to see what kind of discounts can be applied to your rate.
